Squats at 6 a.m. and Other Thoughts Two Weeks In

Two weeks into CrossFit and I’ve already  seen results. They are:

  • I’ve rolled out of bed and 5:15 a.m. for two straight weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to go push and pull heavy stuff around for the sake of being healthy and fit. Not bad.
  • I did squats at 6 a.m. the other day. That’s a challenging way to start off a day, and I made it through.
  • I’ve dropped about four pounds since starting – tightening up a bit.

So far, I’m loving it. The variety suits me best. Each day turns out different thanks to the Workout of the Day. I also enjoy the well-rounded nature of the workouts. You get strength and endurance emphasized in every workout.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the next two weeks turn out.

Hello CrossFit

So I tried CrossFit for the first time today. I learned two things:

  1. I kind of suck at rowing.
  2. Also, I will probably get yelled at a lot by coaches for having my hands on my hips.

Trident CrossFit: Fit, Fast, Strong

All jokes aside, I had a blast at Trident CrossFit. My trainer ran me through the Baseline workout – 500 meter row, 40 squats, 30 sit-ups, 20 push-ups and 10 pull-ups. I completed everything in 16 minutes.

Rowing challenged me the most. I couldn’t seem to get the rhythm or form just right. The things I liked most about the workout, and principles behind CrossFit, are:

  • the big movements, with less focus on smaller muscle groups.
  • the constant flow – no standing around.
  • the gut-it-out mental approach you need.

I’m excited to keep going with CrossFit, and see where it takes me.

Slow Start, But a Start

I started running again a week ago, and logged two runs.

The first one turned into the classic first run for anyone. I cycled between running and walking – for a total of 18 minutes. The second one was a shorter 10-minute run.

I didn’t surge ahead of the pack at the start of my comeback, but progress is progress and that’s always a good thing.

Trying Again

I just turned 33. I find it hard to believe that it’s been 17 years since I first started running.

Growing up, I tried baseball. I loved the game, just wasn’t good at it. I played basketball and played it well, but didn’t have the size to make an impact. Then I found running. It was natural, required guts and came with camaraderie I’d never felt before.

I want to find that again.

That’s part of why I’m here. I’m reimagining this blog. I hope it helps me find running again. I’ve tried this before, with other “back to running” attempts and blogs to chronicle it – and failed. I can’t promise that I won’t fail, but I can promise that I will try not to fail.

Goals

  1. Start running three to six times a week.
  2. Begin a strength training routine.
  3. Run a 5K in June and/or July.

I think this time, I’m keeping things simple enough to start again and find running…
